Faith in the Heart of Jesus

I was thinking recently with all that is going on in the world where does faith come into the conversation?

So, what is faith? How would you describe it to someone? I always go back to its root meaning: in Latin faith means trust or confidence. To have faith in God is to trust God with everything. How can I trust God with everything when I always need to have control? When some little surprise happens in my life, such as when my car suddenly needs repairs and I have no way of paying for it or I lose my job or a family member suddenly become ill, it can be difficult to give up control of my life. But it’s then that we need to trust or have faith that God is working through these little surprises. As difficult as it may be these surprises are what strengthens our faith.

One definition in the Catechism for faith refers to Abraham and how he responded to God’s call for him. We see this definition in Hebrews 11:1 “Faith is the realization of what is hoped for and evidence of things not seen.” (CCC146) It also defines faith as “man’s response to God, who reveals himself and gives himself to man, at the same time bringing man a superabundant light as he searches for the ultimate meaning of his life. (CCC 26)

So what about faith these days when our world seems to be turning upside down. Is God in the “new normal” of life? Do you trust God to safely get you through this public health crisis that we are all experiencing? Since God has been with me through all those little surprises of my life, so far, I continue to place my trust in Him during these big challenges that we are facing now.

Today is the Feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus which is celebrated every year on the Friday after the Feast of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ (Corpus Christi). From its start as pious devotions to the five wounds of Jesus to the private apparitions of Saint Margaret Mary Alacoque this devotion has many followers. For more about this devotion check out this link.

I have had a special devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus for many years. It brings me peace and comfort knowing that I hold a special place in His heart. By placing myself in the Sacred Heart of Jesus I find the grace to grow in the faith I need during every circumstance in my life. Here is the prayer that I say every day:

Prayer to the Sacred Heart of Jesus

O most holy heart of Jesus, fountain of every blessing, I adore you, I love you, and with lively sorrow for my sins I offer you this poor heart of mine. Make me humble, patient, pure and wholly obedient to your will. Good Jesus, grant that I may live in you and for you. Protect me in the midst of danger. Comfort me in my afflictions. Give me health of body, assistance in my temporal needs, your blessing on all that I do, and the grace of a holy death. Amen.
